The Opportunity

A great opportunity for Control Systems engineer to join our fast-growing Performance Science team at Lola, as we continue our push toward engineering excellence, winning championships and realising the Lola mission. The new team member will be responsible for the design, implementation, calibration, and continuous improvement of vehicle control systems that optimise performance, reliability, and driver experience. This role sits at the intersection of software engineering, electronics, data analysis, and race engineering. The engineer will work closely with performance, powertrain, chassis, and trackside teams to deliver high‑quality control solutions that translate directly into on‑track competitiveness.

Role Responsibilities

Develop and maintain real-time embedded control strategies for vehicle systems such as powertrain, energy management, torque delivery, braking systems and thermal management.

  • Create control algorithms using model-based development tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, Stateflow).
  • Conduct simulation, hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HiL), and rig testing to validate control system performance.
  • Support trackside activities, including pre‑event preparation, system calibration, fault analysis, and performance optimisation.
  • Analyse telemetry data to monitor system behaviour and propose improvements.
  • Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineers to integrate control systems with sensors, actuators, wiring, and vehicle hardware.
  • Support ECU and software integration with auxiliary systems such as dashboards, data loggers, power electronics, and driver controls.
  • Maintain and develop documentation and processes for versioning, and traceability of control strategies and embedded software.

Technical Skills required

  • Solid understanding of vehicle dynamics, powertrain systems, thermodynamics, and energy/power management.
  • Expertise with MATLAB/Simulink and code generation workflows (dSPACE, Embedded Coder, or equivalent).
  • Experience with motorsport or automotive ECUs (e.g., Bosch, Magneti Marelli, Cosworth, McLaren ATLAS ecosystem).
  • Data analysis skills using tools such as ATLAS, Pi Toolbox, or similar.
  • Experience and expertise with programming languages such as Python and C++/C#
  • Familiarity with tyre modelling

Soft Skills

  • Driven, proactive and passionate about high-performance engineering and continual development.
  • Excited to work in a open, transparent, fast-paced engineering environment.
  • Stress-tolerant and excited by a fluid, changing environment.
  • Methodical, measured and with very strong attention to detail.
  • Can work well both independently and as a team player.

Qualifications & Experience required

  • Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Control Systems, Automotive, or related field).
  • Experience in motorsport (F1, FE, WEC, GT, IndyCar, rally, or high-performance automotive), ideally 2–5+ years depending on role level.
  • Familiarity with development rig testing, HIL systems, and validation methodologies.

Role Location & Hours

The role will be hybrid - based at the Silverstone, Lola Facility with the option for some flexibility for remote working. 40hrs/wk - normal working days Monday to Friday.
